The Tafika Fund by Remote Africa Safaris
Background
Remote Africa Safaris is a safari operation and is actively involved,
through its Tafika Fund, in sustainably uplifting the surrounding community
of Mkasanga village in Mwanya. The Tafika Fund was set up by John and
Carol Coppinger in 1998 and has been managed by Carol ever since.
School and clinical assistance
The Tafika fund gives general assistance to the (government run) Mkasanga
School in a number of ways. From building renovation, to the purchase
and supply of stationery, textbooks, library, desks, school supplies,
additional educational material and the payment of assistant teachers'
salaries. This makes a significant difference to present lives and future
aspirations of Mkasanga scholars. Each term pupils are provided with stationery
to ensure they can make full use of their opportunities for study, not
hampered by the poverty stresses their families may be experiencing.
The Tafika Fund built an outpatient clinic in Mkasanga
which officially opened its doors in 2006, and acts as a first aid centre
for the 2000+ residents of Mkasanga. A government medical officer oversees
the clinic and tends to patients while the fund pays a monthly wage for
an assistant to the officer. Periodically medical supplies and maintenance
assistance may be donated to supplement the clinic provisions and operations.
Scholarship programme
The Tafika Fund runs annual scholarship programmes for school pupils
and college students.
Every year, the four top scoring grade nines in Mwanya are awarded a fully comprehensive scholarship to complete their schooling. Approximately 12 pupils are supported on full high school scholarships at boarding schools further afield, to complete grades 10 to 12 every year, as no local schools offer these grades. The support for these young pupils includes accommodation, food and transport costs, as well as school tuition fees, books and uniforms which costs approximately $700 per annum.
The Tafika Fund offers further sponsorship for skills
training and college students every year.
Between 8 and 10 students are supported annually. Education, nursing
and medical officer training seem to be the most popular choices currently,
with some students completing 3 to 4 year degrees in science and accounting.
Funding a skills/university student costs approximately $2500 - $3500
per annum.
Football for Wildlife
The Football for Wildlife league was started in 2015. The objective
of the League is to build awareness and enthusiasm for wildlife conservation
through the community's abiding love of soccer as well as spreading
the benefit of tourism over the greater community with every player
and match official receiving payment for their participation.
8 mens teams and 8 womens teams, half from Chifunda (North Luangwa) and 4 from Mwanya Chiefdoms (South Luangwa). Each team represents individual villages, generating great inter-village rivalry and comradery for the 6 week period of the league. In 2017 the football league was expanded to include a ladies' league, offering encouragement and opportunities for the woman of the Luangwa, as well as men.
